The Victron Orion DC-DC converter is like a charge controller, but for your alternator! It takes power from your vehicle's electrical system while the vehicle is running, and uses it to optimally charge your LiFePO4 solar battery bank.
 
Nearly all vehicle electrical systems these days are still designed and optimized for lead-acid batteries, and connecting a lithium battery bank to an electrical system designed for lead-acid batteries is sub-optimal at best, and can be dangerous at worst.
 
The Orion acts as an isolator, charging when the vehicle is running and preventing drain on your starter battery, but it also acts as a charge controller, monitoring the state of your battery bank and providing the optimal charging voltage and current accordingly. It's like having an extra 360W solar panel putting out full power while you drive!
